newly married couple embracing at night with a beautiful reflection

Let's start by saying this:

Each wedding is uniquely yours. This is only a guide to help you navigate a bit of the confusion and why it can be a touchy subject.

In some bigger cities and metro areas like Denver, Colorado, a wedding of 50 people is a "micro-wedding", while in smaller areas, like Estes Park, that is a larger, fuller wedding day. Some will say that when there are more than the two of you present, it's a "micro-wedding", and not an "elopement". Does it even matter, and why?

Let's dive in, but first...

...keep in mind, this is how we at Pyle Photography classify each, and it's really so we know the logistics and how we'll manage your day. We live in Estes Park and our weddings are typically smaller.

Others may have an opinion that's different from this, and that's great! We find it useful to classify each so we can be fully aware and present on each wedding, micro-wedding, or elopement day.

Beginning with "Weddings"

Weddings are nothing short of spectacular, big events! We love weddings, and we have made a career out of being a small part of them. It is an honor each time we're there!

So, the real question: What makes a wedding a "wedding"? For our purposes, which may generalize this farther than what a beautiful day should be, a "wedding" is this:

When sixteen people or more are present, we classify it as a wedding. BOOM.

Logistically, having more than fifteen people present becomes exponentially more photos, collaboration, setup, and time. Aside from that, there are several venues available for fifteen people or less within Rocky Mountain National Park, but that is the maximum number. Since most of our weddings and micro-weddings occur either there or places that are similar, that's the number we chose.

... and now, "Micro-Weddings"

Micro-weddings have just within the past fifteen years become a "thing". They have always existed, but never been named as such.

Micro-weddings are intimate, meaningful, and full of emotion. If you're there-it really means something. The couples that choose a micro-wedding have given a lot of careful thought to who they want with them and it isn't to be taken lightly.

The micro-weddings we have photographed consist of fifteen people or less, typically. The calmness, emotion, and ease all add to the beauty of what these small ceremonies mean.

The moment you've all been waiting for...Elopements!

Why choose an adventure elopement?

The trend for couples to elope instead of having a traditional wedding is happening for several reasons.

Here are the most common ones:

1. Adventure & Experience Over Tradition

• Many couples prefer epic landscapes (mountains, beaches, forests, deserts) over banquet halls.

• They want a once-in-a-lifetime experience that reflects their adventurous spirit.

• Hiking to a scenic overlook or saying vows under the northern lights is more exciting than a ballroom setting.

2. Intimacy & Meaningful Moments

• Elopements are all about the couple—no distractions, no stress, just pure connection.

• They can focus on each other, rather than pleasing hundreds of guests.

• Private vows in a breathtaking setting make the moment deeply personal and unforgettable.

3. Cost Savings & Financial Freedom

• The average U.S. wedding costs $30,000-$50,000, while elopements often cost a fraction of that ($5,000-$15,000).

• Instead of spending thousands on seating charts and centerpieces, couples can invest in travel, photography, and experiences.

• Some use the savings for a dream honeymoon, a home down payment, or an adventure-filled life together.

4. Less Stress, More Freedom

• No worrying about family drama, massive guest lists, or rigid timelines.

• No pressure from traditions they don’t connect with.

• They can truly relax and enjoy their wedding day on their own terms.

5. Stunning Photography & Storytelling

• Elopements in breathtaking locations result in incredible, cinematic wedding photos.

• The scenery becomes a part of their love story, making the memories even more special.

• Adventure wedding photographers specialize in capturing authentic, raw moments in nature.

6. Travel & Bucket List Destinations

• An elopement is often a built-in honeymoon—why not say “I do” somewhere amazing and keep exploring?

• Couples can check off bucket list destinations together (Iceland, Patagonia, Santorini, the Rockies, etc.).

• Some opt for destination elopements with a few loved ones, combining adventure with a small, intimate celebration.

7. More Authentic to Who They Are

• Not everyone dreams of a big, traditional wedding—many couples prefer something meaningful, unique, and true to them.

• They don’t want to get married for other people—they want to do it for themselves.

• Whether it’s barefoot on a beach, under a waterfall, or on a mountaintop, their wedding reflects who they really are.
